| Edwin Jahiel Is Professor of French and Professor of Cinema Studies. In the early 1970s he
founded the Unit for Cinema Studies, UIUC, and was its Director for some 25 years
(1972-l997)
He launched film criticism in the Champaign-Urbana newspapers, radio
and TV. He has been for many years a film critic for the News-Gazette. Has also
been a contributor to several cinema journals abroad, in France, Poland, India, England,
etc.
For decades he has attended many film festivals in Europe, notably
the Cannes Film Festival which he has covered almost continously since the 1960s.
Edwin Jahiel was educated in private schools in Greece, France and
Switzerland, then went to the University of Virginia and the University of Michigan (Ann
Arbor), receiving from the latter his M.A. and Ph.D. in Romance Languages. He taught at
Michigan, then came to the French Department of the UIUC where he has given a variety of
language, literature, and culture courses. Since the creation of the Unit for Cinema
Studies he has concentrated on film courses such as French and Comparative Cinema.
He is an elected member of FIPRESCI, the International Association
of Film Critics (which, among others, gives important prizes in festivals), and of the
Association of French Film Critics.
Several years ago, the French Government awarded him the title of
Chevalier (Knight) in the prestigious "Order of the Academic Palms." He was
later promoted to the rank of "Officier" in that Order.
